Shanghai Masters Cup

A busy schedule has been keeping me from my blog, though it´s not completely stopped me from keeping my eye on the tennis.

I was very excited when I heard about the Terracotta Warriors being made for this year´s Masters Cup in Shanghai. However, upon seeing the finished product I can´t help being rather disappointed (see for yourself here). They obviously had to rush to get them all finished on time - possibly why they gave Gasquet, who qualified at the last minute, a cap. Considering they knew Federer was in right from the start they´ve done a poor job on him, although Nadal´s cheekbones have been captured perfectly. All in all, the best likeness has to be Roddick - the vacant stare in his terracotta counterpart matches his own exactly!

I'm really intrigued to know if you play or prefer to watch.

I'm an avid tennis watching fan but I also play at my local club in West Somerset, UK.

One of the greatest things to happen to British tennis is, of course Andy Murrey but I think the yoke may be one he doesn't want to bear.

It seems from what I hear that his reason for not playing in the Davis Cup for the UK was because he 'might' get an injury not because he actually 'had' an injury.

I can sympathize with his wish to best further his career but am saddened for what it will do for our slim chances of keeping our Davis Cup position.

Rob, thanks for the comment. I have so little time to keep up with blogging at the moment I've only just discovered it.

I don't play tennis. Well, very rarely and exceedingly badly. I would like to and if I had the time and money I would pay someone to teach me. Although I have awful balance, dreadful hand-eye co-ordination and dodgy ankles, so I'm not sure how far I'd get.

I think Murray's reasoning was also influenced by the abilites of the other Davis Cup players. Even if he had played, victory was not probable - Argentina, clay...

I have never been an avid watcher of the Davis Cup - I prefer watching individuals/doubles partners playng for themsleves, not for the country that they happen to have been born in/adopted by. So I can further sympathise with Murray. I frequently argue with my students about their adoration of Nadal. They only support him because he happens to be Spanish and number two in the world (Personally, I would prefer to watch Ferrer, or Moya). And while he has great talent, for pure style and the sheer pleasure of watching, you can't, of course, beat Federer.

Raelha!! I've tried to get on your Milk and Honey blog and it is refusing to let me on!
What do I do to be one of the chosen ones?
Lorenzo.

Wow! Wasn't that a great win by Andy M. at Dubai?

Not many moments of brilliance by either side, but the result guarantees tennis watching fun for a few more days.

Rob, *sniff* No TV and not being able to get cable in any case means I don´t get to watch any tennis anymore - how I miss my Eurosport student days. A good win by Murray and some sour grapes from Federer afterwards, the stroppy teenager´s still in there after all! What happened against Davydenko?

Lorenzo et al., sorry for my prolonged absence and lack of comments. I´m busy dealing with some problems here at the moment - it´s not just you, nobody´s invited - I hope to have it back online soon, once I deal with everything and get my head sorted out.

Take care all. Raelha x

Raelha, Murray lost against Davydenko - I believe for the first time!

It wasn't a good match for him and he was swearing and cussing all over the place - not pleasant.

Even the commentator said he thought he'd gone too far and it is rare for them to take a view in that way.

However, he got through to the quarter finals in a tournament that was basically amongst the top ten so one musn't be too negative.

I suppose he'll go away, yell at his team (allegedly) and come back with an improved game plan.

His present play oscillates between defensive wearing-them-down strategy, which probably won't work in the long run at this level, and brilliant attacking play which shows he could be number one in the world.

It's a fascinating journey but I have to confess I didn't enjoy watching him against Davydenko.
